Caldwell Family Retreat

The Caldwell Family Retreat is an immersive three-day experience designed to bring family members together in a secluded, discreet environment where they can bond, share, confront, and heal. Families come together to closely examine their ways of relating to one another, and to discover how these ways can sometimes be inadvertently harmful to other family members.

During the weekend, parents will learn about four key messages that set children up for success, and review the eight stages of human development that pave the way for children to become fully functioning adults. Parents will reflect on their own parenting strategies thus far, and work individually with family coaches to make any necessary adjustments.

Kids will be introduced to their own nervous systems, and learn the ins and outs of stress, anger, and overwhelm. They will work hands-on with family coaches to discover the tricks to managing anxiety, and use interactive exercises to practice these new skills.

Armed with new knowledge, families will then come together to investigate their own family dynamics. Through four key exercises, families will reveal the unspoken truths of their “family dance,” and see their interactions in a completely new light. The weekend will conclude with family pledges—members will be encouraged to take accountability for their part, and make pledges to change for the better.

While the retreat is designed for a small group of families, at no time are family members expected to share personal information with other participants. Families will only come together during lectures and receptions, and otherwise will work closely with their private family coach to implement the strategies learned along the way.

Families of all shapes and sizes are invited to experience the Caldwell Family Retreat with one exception: Young children are not yet equipped to handle the intensity and sophistication of lectures and discussions. For this reason, CFI asks that families with children younger than 11 consider waiting until all children are of age, or finding childcare for younger siblings that cannot participate.

No professional can draw a “hard line” at any age, so there are special circumstances where CFI will consider the maturity level of a child under 11 (and a child over 11, if maturity is a concern). Decisions regarding the participation of younger children will be made on a case by case basis by CFI staff.

Due to the sensitive nature of the experience, it is important for participants to be ready for potentially intense and uncomfortable family conversations. Likewise, it is crucial for the Caldwell Family Institute to select the “right” families for a small group experience—an error in selection on our end can have the unfortunate result of tainting the experience for everyone.

For this reason, CFI requires an application for attendance at our retreats. Participating families are asked to complete an online questionnaire, followed by a phone interview with at least one family leader (a parent, grandparent, or adult child). If any family members are currently working with a therapist, coach, sponsor, or clergy member, CFI staff will ask permission to consult with these professionals for additional information.

We ask that family members not use the retreat experience for any of the following reasons:

  • Announcing a divorce for the first time
  • Announcing an infidelity for the first time
  • Revealing an addiction for the first time
  • Conducting an intervention
  • Coming out of the closet for LGBTQ
  • Issuing ultimatums

These are all profoundly important and delicate moments in the life of a family, and should be treated with the utmost care, compassion, and respect. The retreat environment is not designed to afford families the time and space that would be required to handle such delicate family matters. If you or your family members are seeking help with these issues, we would like to direct you to our family coaching services.
